the long road?

Yes, well I know it looks like the outline of Oz but I rode it. I left Sydney on March 1, finishing in Perth early July.

I rode through southern coastal NSW right to Bega, then headed inland - crossing over the border and the Snowy River.

In Victoria, I headed south to Bairnsdale and then headed down for South Gippsland (Gippsland is the area all around Melbourne).

After a brief visit to French Island, near Phillip Island, I rode straight up into industrial Melbourne.

The leaving of the big city wasn't much better, as I found the opposite end also boasted large, fume spewing factories.

I then coasted along the Great Ocean Road along till the edge of the state, crossing over at the lovely Piccanninnie Ponds.

South Australia, barren but beautiful.

The lovely Coorong Wetlands, south of Adelaide, kept my company for 150kms until I rode into city through the SA equivalent of the Blue Mountains - the Hills.

Up the west coast of the peninsula to Ceduna - that marvel of a town (it just has a bad rep) - I rejuvinated myself whilst a nasty storm blew the weekend over.

I spent two weeks crossing the country's waistbelt, pausing only in Madura, and taking the scenic route down, carefully avoiding Norseman, straight to Esperance.

With a name like Esperance you can't go wrong, I thought, and it turned out to be a surprising town. The alltoofamiliar silos lined the shorefront true, but She had such a nice feel, and what with the Cape Le Grand NP up the road, I was content for awhile.

I pushed on to Albany, through gale force head winds and all, and on into the southwest pocket of Western Australia - a lush area boastinh amazing old growth and Karri forests.

Battling Achillies tendonitis, I cut up through Bunbury via Nannup, missing Margret River, and rode on into Perth, saying cheerio to some friends.

Riding north and perhaps a little east through wine country led me to Augusta, whom many of you know as the "Crossroads of Australia".

South-west led me down into Eyre Peninsula, down that V-shaped point of South Australia to Port Lincoln. Like most SA towns, its most prominent feature was the SACBH silos.
