Frequently Asked Questions
(with common responses and familiar followups)

  • Where are you coming from?
  • Actually, I'm from the city, this is my first day.
  • Really?
  • Yes, really.
  • Have fun.

  • So, where you from?
  • Ohh, just from Sydney.
  • Where bouts you headed?
  • Perth.
  • Perth aye? F***. Good luck!

  • Aren't you tired?
  • Nah, I'm okay.
  • Geez, I would be.
  • (uncertain smile)

  • Would you like a lift mate, ha?
  • No thanks.
  • No worries.

  • What the hell are you doing here on that thing?!

  • Were you that guy we passed earlier today with the guitar on the back?
  • Probably.

  • Don't you get lonely?
  • Yeah, once I start talking I don't stop.
  • Oh yes?
  • Yes.

  • Why would you ride a BIKE from SYDNEY??? YOU'RE F***ing CRAZY. (Very seriously)
  • Why not?

  • Are you not too hot dear?
  • No, but thanks for the concern. I've got heaps of water.

  • You went across the Nullarbor on that??
  • Yep.

  • Where are you going to?
  • Perth.
  • Not long now aye? And where have you come from?
  • Sydney.
  • ON THE BICYCLE??

  • Have you had any troubles with the big trucks son?
  • The Road-Trains? No, I've got my trusty helmet-mirror and I keep an eye on the traffic. I get off the road if they can't overtake me easily.
  • Any close calls then?
  • Well, once I had three road-trains headed for me and the one in the middle decided "Gee, I think I'm gunna overtake the guy in front," leaving me on the narrow shoulder, incredulous as two roadtrains - taking up the entire road - are heading straight for me.

  • Was there anyone else with you?
  • No.
  • And you camped ALONE?
  • Yep.
  • Were you scared?
  • No. There isn't much to be scared of (cept for a rogue roo or two).

  • What was the worst part?
  • Probably the two days where I rode through 120km/h headwinds riding 40kms both days inching towards Ravensthorpe. Constructively, I developed a good tucking techinuqe to minimise wind resistance, however I spent a great deal of time prior to that swearing loudly at every gust.
  • The best?
  • Stopping when I was halfway across Australia, taking a breath and realising that I had ridden from my home to here. I had gotten there by determination alone.
